Henry Wachtel was arraigned on a second-degree murder charge early last April after he allegedly beat his mother to death during an epileptic seizure in their Manhattan apartment. He has been in jail ever since.
But it was announced Thursday that the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office had agreed to a $40,000 bail package that would move Wachtel from jail to a secure medical facility.
The murder charge stands. Wachtel will remain in the facility until prosecutors and his lawyer can determine whether he will take a deal, go to trial or see his charges dropped.
Wachtel’s mother, Karyn Kay, was a popular teacher at LaGuardia High School in Manhattan. His father, Edward Wachtel, is a media studies professor at Fordham. He was with his son on Thursday, according to The New York Post.
Wachtel was a freshman in Fordham’s School of Professional and Continuing Studies and 19 years old when he was arrested last spring.
