About 2,500 Fordham early admission applicants received financial aid notices earlier this week that mistakenly told them they had been accepted into the class of 2018.

In actuality, 500 of those applicants had been rejected and the remaining 2,000 had been deferred, Bob Howe, communications director at Fordham, confirmed for The New York Times.

The mistaken notices were emailed to applicants by a third-party contractor, Student Aid Services, and not the university, the Times reported. Fordham administrators broke the bad — in some cases devastating — news to those applicants a few hours after the erroneous letters were sent.

“Fordham and its undergraduate admissions staff are acutely aware of the high hopes prospective students and their families have regarding college acceptances,” the school said in a statement. “The University deeply regrets that some applicants were misled by the financial aid notice. The admission staff is working with S.A.S. to find out what went wrong.”
