There was a time in the recent past when you wouldn’t see students crossing Webster Ave. alone. Normally this would make me enraged, but I always felt sorry for anybody who spends 4 years of his or her life locked in a gated community because of fear of the unknown.

There’s a lot more to Bedford Park/Fordham/Belmont than Starbucks, Chipotle, and Applebee’s. You have all these cultural institutions within a short distance, are in one of the best transportation corridors in the city, and can experience a microcosm of Puerto Rico, Ireland, Italy, Ghana, Korea, and more without leaving the neighborhood. Unless you are wandering aimlessly down dark side streets at 3 am or flashing the newest iPhone without checking your surroundings, street smarts go a long way.

“This is kind of problematic because you have the community who has to live there full time.”

This quote makes it sound as if living here is some kind of punishment. In fact, I and many others I know LOVE living in the Bronx and our neighborhoods are OUR oases.
