Yeah, I’ll have to disagree with you on that.

It needed to diversify as it was stagnant at best. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/26/opinion/usc-neighborhood-academic-initiative-lifting-kids-to-college.html . Meritocracy is great but so is diversity.

Fordham became Fort Fordham for a reason, once a student stepped outside of those gates it was a very different world. If it had not changed it would not be around, that is a given. Fordham now stands to lose some of it’s cash cow to students that take residency off campus. Fordham needs to acquire land off campus for expansion while there is still a chance in the Bronx, especially science and graduate school or any new discipline they see as a burgeoning field. Fordham desperately needs a new science building plus computer science. If they wait the chance will blow by, the Bronx will become Brooklyn like, NYC and outer boroughs are all about land and price. Once gentrification comes in crime moves elsewhere, the Bronx has been frozen in time due to it’s crime perception both perceived and real, crime is still high and there are murders outside of those gates.

Fordham has to maintain course to compete nationally and internationally, Columbia did not just take in students from Harlem back in the 70’s and 80’s (never did). Some of Fordham’s problem is whittling down Bronx hired staff who are useless in many cases, or just have way too much Bronx attitude. Student tuition should not go to charity in hiring local simply to support the neighbourhood, ditto student intake. The Bronx needs to grow up and attract business, especially tech. Importantly the Bronx should not be the fiefdom of politicians that grew up there and want to own their people so they get elected and maintain the status quo. The neighbourhood needs to end its self defeating attitude that has burdened on itself for decades, times change and so will the Bronx. Keep what is good and move on from the rest, Fordham did it’s bit but as an academic institution it has to attract the best and brightest in a extremely competitive international market, Fordham is not that well known to this day especially internationally (actually unheard of).

There is no going back, Fordham has enough issues simply balancing it’s books, financially it is not out of the woods ! If it were not for the likes of Walsh, Gabelli etc Fordham would really be struggling to attract students, no one wants to attend a dump based on a story that Lombardi went there. Facilities at both campuses are still a huge issue, graduate school is declining in enrolment which is a huge problem indicator. GSB grad has to rely on a ridiculous over emphasis of Chinese students doing MS degrees just to survive, a secret degree factory at Lincoln Center ! Law enrolment is down to maintain stats, hiring at bar graduation is 53% per US News. Fordham is not well known and is now ridiculously expensive for a mediocre graduate brand, if it loses grad schools that will be a huge problem, at the doctoral research level not much is going on and the brand is bad
