At the recent Ballon D’Or ceremony, not too many people were shocked to see Lionel Messi pick up his fourth award in a row. However, what is more surprising is that the FIFA Team of the Year contained only players from Spain’s La Liga. In fact, the only member that was not from either Barcelona or Real Madrid was Falcao. This is especially surprising considering last year’s Champions League Final did not see either side compete but rather featured Chelsea and Bayern Munich, two sides which could not even win their respective League titles. This brought up the question of which league is stronger, the Premier League or La Liga. To test this out I have come up with my best 11 for these two countries with and without the strongest two teams in each league, Barcelona/Real Madrid, and Manchester United/Manchester City. Which do you think looks the stronger?

With Top Two La Liga:

G) Iker Casillas (Real Madrid)

RB) Marcelo (Real Madrid)

CB) Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid)

CB) Gerard Pique (Barcelona)

LB) Jordi Alba (Barcelona)

CM) Xabi Alonso(Real Madrid)

CM) Andres Iniesta (Barcelona)

CM) Xavi (Barcelona)

F) Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)

F) Lionel Messi (Barcelona)

F) Falcao (Athletico Madrid)

With Top Two EPL:

G) Petr Cech (Chelsea)

RB) Rafael (Man United)

CB) Vincent Kompany (Man City)

CB) Branislav Ivanovic (Chelsea)

LB) Leighton Baines (Everton)

RM) Juan Mata (Chelsea)

CM) Yaya Toure (Man City)

CM) Michael Carrick (Man United)

LM) Gareth Bale (Tottenham)

F) Robin Van Persie (Man United)

F) Sergio Aguero (Man City)

Without Top Two La Liga:

G) Thibaut Courtois (Athletico Madrid)

RB) Filipe Luis (Atletico Madrid)

CB) Martin Demichellis (Malaga)

CB) Carlos Marchena (Deportivo)

LB) Nacho Monreal (Malaga)

CM) Isco (Malaga)

CM) Oscar Gonzalez (Valladolid)

CM) Perez Nacho (Real Betis)

F) Artiz Adruiz (Athletic Bilbao)

F) Falcoa (Athletico Madrid)

F) Roberto Soldado (Valencia)

Without Top Two EPL:

G) Petr Cech (Chelsea)

RB) Branislav Ivanovic (Chelsea)

CB) Sylvain Distin (Everton)

CB) Ryan Shawcross (Stoke City)

LB) Leighton Baines (Everton)

RM) Juan Mata (Chelsea)

CM) Santi Carzola (Arsenal)

CM) Steven Gerrard (Liverpool)

LM) Gareth Bale (Tottenham)

F) Michu (Swansea)

F) Luis Suarez (Liverpool)

So which league is stronger? While La Liga may have Barcelona and Real Madrid, probably the two best teams in the world right now along with possibly Man United, La Liga doesn’t have as much depth as the English Premier League. The Premier League has more players in their best 11 from outside the top two and in the Best 11 without the top two, they have players from more clubs. In my opinion, though La Liga has two fantastic teams and two fantastic players, the top League is still the Barclays Premier League.

So let me ask you two watch some football before commenting on it.
