This past Thursday, the United Student Government (USG) discussed the two bias incidents that were reported on campus last week. Executive Vice President Kaylee Wong, GSB ’20, said the drawing of a swastika and the written racial slur were both removed and the New York Police Department is looking into the incidents. The senate released a statement saying that Fordham is an open community and that the University community can do better to combat incidents like this.

USG also approved two new clubs, The Pamphlet and Chicks with Sticks.

The Pamphlet is a publication that wants to provide alternative perspectives to issues of campus politics, domestic politics and global politics. Representatives from the club said they plan to release multiple issues per semester that are mostly opinion pieces. They said they want to voice certain opinions that are not expressed by publications today, but they would not deny articles that do not align with the conservative views of the publication. They said they would also like to host programming such as debates or seminars from professors about political issues.

Chicks with Sticks is a Fordham field hockey club that includes a service project. Representatives from the club said they want to partner with fourth and fifth graders in the Bronx and teach them to play field hockey. They asked for funding to provide equipment for their members and the girls they will mentor. They said the sport is relatively easy to pick up and they hope to scrimmage with the club members as well as mentor young girls in the area.

Vice President of Communications Roderick Perez, GSB ’20, presented a flyer for the USG photo contest. He said the contest requires students liking one of USG’s posts on Instagram, tagging three friends, following USG’s Instagram and taking a photo around Fordham and sending it to USG. After doing all of this, the student will be entered to win a $25 Amazon gift card. Perez said this contest will help USG stockpile photos, help the USG Instagram account gain followers and bring visibility to their Instagram.

In his update, Vice President of Health and Security Nate Singh, FCRH ’19, said that during the Week of Action, the t-shirts from the clothesline project will hang on McGinley walkway all week. He also said that all Public Safety officers are now CPR trained and he will try to get all of Residential Life CPR certified as well.
