The Residence Halls Association (RHA) has announced this year’s theme for Under the Tent will be “The Last Illusion: An Evening of Magic & Mystery.”

Under the Tent will take place the Saturday night of Spring Weekend, April 25, beginning at 9 p.m. Students are encouraged to wear formal dress. The poster for the event, as illustrated by freshman Aya Nukina, portrays a sophisticated couple dressed in a tuxedo and formal gown traveling up Keating Steps at night.

“It was important to us that this year the dance have a distinct “evening” feel to it,” said executive vice president CJ Cacace, FCRH ‘15, “because the last two themes were lighter.”

“This year’s unique theme was inspired by the style and countenance of famous illusionists such as Harry Houdini and classic early twentieth century styles,” added e-board member Emma Bausert, FCRH ‘17.

“This theme is unique, sophisticated, and very different than anything RHA has done before. We are trying to put a mysterious, old time spin on an elegant evening affair. Our decorations, centerpieces and lighting are inspired by old woods and antiques from the early twentieth century, and will reflect some of Houdini’s escapes.”

These early twentieth century styles include colors such as burgundy, black and dark gold. Fashions include long elegant, gowns for women and classic tuxedos and waist coats and trousers for men.

According to the RHA e-board, the inside of the tent inspiration was a The Magic Castle, a nightclub for magicians and magic enthusiasts in California.

“This theme was somewhat difficult to envision because nothing like this has really been done before,” Bausert added. “I am confident that we create an awesome atmosphere that people will love. I am also excited about seeing everyone dress up!”

Tickets for Under the Tent will go on sale Wednesday, April 15 at noon in McGinley Lobby and will be sold until 5 p.m. or until the amount of tickets sells out.

The pre-sale ticket cost $25. Students must bring a valid Fordham ID to purchase a ticket.
