Men’s Tennis Falls to Saint Louis, Beats Hofstra

This weekend, Fordham Men’s Tennis played a double-header. Their first match was on Saturday, against Saint Louis University, which they lost 5-2. Their second match was on Sunday against Hofstra University, which they won 4-3. Both matches were played at Fordham’s indoor home courts in Harrison.

The doubles matches were played first. Senior Tomas Cosmai and freshman Allen Thornes were first doubles, and they fell with a score of 6-1, while second doubles team sophomore Victor Li and freshman Jeremy Chung fell 7-5. The third doubles team, which consisted of senior Nick Borak and junior Joseph Kavaloski, won for Fordham with a score of 6-3. With a final doubles score of 2-1, Fordham lost the doubles point.

In singles play, Fordham won two out of the six matches. All of the matches were lengthy and rigorous, with four of the six matches going out to three sets. In first singles, sophomore Li lost with a score of 6-2, 3-6, 2-6. Senior Cosmai played second singles, and he secured a point for Fordham by winning 2-6, 6-3, 6-6 (1-0). His third set ended early, which gave him the win by default. Freshman Thornes lost in third singles with a score of 5-7, 0-6, while freshman Mauritzson fell with a score of 3-6, 3-6 in fourth singles. In the fifth singles position, senior Borak fought hard in an extremely close match, ultimately coming out on top and winning 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (4). For sixth singles, freshman Chung fell in three sets with a score of 7-5, 3-6, 5-7.  Thus, the final score against Saint Louis was 2-5.

In their match against Hofstra, Fordham lost all of the doubles matches, giving Hofstra the sole doubles point. The Rams pulled through in the singles matches, winning four out of six of them.  Cosmai won first singles with a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, while Li won second singles in another three-setter, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-1. The third singles position, played by Thornes, went to Hofstra with a score of 6-3, 6-2. Mauritzson played fourth singles, falling with a score of 3-6, 1-6. In fifth singles, Borak had a close match, and wound up winning in a three-setter, 6-3, 6-7(8), 6-3. Finally, Chung won the sixth singles position with a score of 6-4, 6-3. Thus, Fordham received four singles points, making the final score 4-3.

Next weekend the Rams will be traveling up to West Point for another double-header. They will be playing Army at West Point on Saturday and Saint Bonaventure on Sunday.
