After weeks of representing Fordham at other facilities, Women’s Tennis finally had its home opener at Rose Hill’s Hawthorn/ Rooney Tennis Courts on Sunday, March 13. The team defeated the Binghamton Bearcats 4-3.
The event began with the doubles matches. In first doubles, juniors Mayu Sato and Hannah Drayton downed Shea Brodsky and Alexis Tashiro in an easy 6-1 set. After that, freshman Alexis Zobeideh and junior Destiny Grunin defeated Agatha Ambrozy and Olga Ostrovetsky.
Freshman Gianna Insogna took the first singles win for Fordham in a quick match against Paulina Tafler, winning with a line of 6-1, 6-0. Soon after, Grunin continued Fordham’s winning streak with a 6-2, 6-1 match against Ambrozy, one of her doubles opponents. The third match to finish was a face-off between Sato and Annie DiMuro, and Sato won by a score of 6-1, 6-4.
Although they both won their respective doubles matches, Drayton and Zobeideh fell in singles. Still, both took their matches to three sets. Drayton fought especially hard, dropping her match to Brodsky by a score of 6-3, 4-6, 13-11, and Zobeideh came up short against Tashiro, losing 1-6, 7-5, 10-7. The day ended with a first singles loss by Estelle Wong in a three-set match. Binghamton senior Sara Kohtz ended up winning 6-4, 3-6, 10-8.
Over spring break, the team will travel to Orlando, Florida, where they will face off against Quinnipiac, University of Rhode Island and Bethune-Cookman.
