Smooth Sailing: How to Plan Your Boat's Overseas Move with Ease
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Reddit

Moving your boat overseas isn’t easy. If it was you wouldn’t be reading this post. A lot of time and money has to go into transporting boats as they’re very large and expensive vehicles. Unfortunately, a lot of people take shortcuts with transporting their boats and as a consequence end up seriously damaging them.

It is of course possible to sail one’s yacht overseas but for most people, this is not an option and some vessels simply cannot withstand the open ocean. This post will explore this topic in more detail, telling you how you can move your boat overseas with ease.

Transportation Companies

In truth, you only really have two options when it comes to moving your boat overseas. Without a doubt, the best of these is to hire a transportation company. A boat shipping firm will be able to transport your yacht to your intended destination quickly and efficiently.

Without a professional company’s help, you will have to move your boat yourself. Moving your own boat can be a lot of work and isn’t feasible for the average person (as they have too many commitments to devote several months to moving boats around the world).

If you do plan on hiring a professional transportation company then the first thing you need to do is read reviews. An organisation’s reviews will help you to determine whether it is wise for you to hire them or not.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of companies offering yacht shipping services that simply cannot be trusted. Remember boats are not cheap. If you do not find a reliable company to work with then your yacht could end up getting damaged or worse, get stolen. Check out a company’s star rating on Google as well.

Sailing or Driving Yourself

The only other option you really have as far as transporting your boat is concerned is to transport it yourself. There are two ways of doing this. The first method of transporting your boat yourself is by sea. If you are an experienced sailor then you will be able to sail it yourself, though this could take a lot of time. Transporting a boat by the ocean isn’t a fast process; it can take months depending on where you are going. If you do plan on sailing it yourself then make sure that you are a qualified, experienced sailor first. There are courses you can take that will help you to become more skilled.

The only other method of transporting your boat is by attaching it to a trailer and then towing it via car. If you want to sail it at another port or coast in your country then this is a cheaper alternative than professional transportation. Depending upon where you are going it could be a much quicker method, too. Travelling by sea can be very time-consuming even if you are skirting a country’s coast to get to your desired location.

Preparing Your Boat

If you are planning on transporting it then you need to prepare it. Preparing your yacht for transportation via trailer or by sea is different to preparing it to be taken by a professional company. Most companies will want you to clean its interior and tie everything down.

You can of course pay a little bit extra to have the company transporting it tie everything down for you. Everything is tied down so that if the boat is jolted or moved, nothing breaks. You also need to make sure that your boat is insured so that if it does get damaged you don’t have to foot the bill yourself.

If you are travelling by car then you’ll want to tie everything down and make sure your boat is fit to be towed. If on the other hand, you are travelling by sea the boat doesn’t need to be prepared – you do. You need to make sure you have all of the equipment you need for a journey at sea and must ensure you are experienced and qualified enough to sail. Again, there are courses you can take which can teach you everything that one would ever need to know about sailing in a short period of time.

Getting Some Insurance

If you plan on transporting your boat then again you need to make sure that you get insurance, just in case your boat gets damaged during transit. Insurance will mean you don’t have to pay to make repairs yourself.

Transporting your yacht is something you will have to do at least once during your time as a boat owner. If you plan on transporting yours then do your research and find out about the best and cheapest ways of moving it. Always read a transport firm’s reviews before hiring them.
