The men’s tennis team struggled to get off to a good start under new head coach Mike Sowter, but the Rams looked like they may have finally turned things around this Sunday. The men defeated Yeshiva University 6-1, in what was not only Sowter’s first win as Fordham’s head coach, but also his 100th career victory as a men’s college tennis head coach.
The men opened the match by winning both of their doubles matches to get the all-important doubles point. The Freshmen team of Joey Brander and Harris Durkovic teamed up to win their match, 8-2, while junior Pedro Alonzo and freshman Joseph Kavaloski earned an 8-3 victory over their opponents.
The Rams would dominate the rest of the match as well, winning five of their six singles matches. Senior Max Peara won his match with ease, defeating his opponent 6-0, 6-0. Brander won with the same score in his match as well. In the second spot for the team, freshman Pol Giraldez won his third straight singles match, with a score of 6-4, 7-6. And Joseph Kavaloski continued the success for the Rams, winning 6-1,6-0.
Head coach Mike Sowter was hired this winter, and while he had seen encouraging signs, the results were not coming against tougher opponents. The team finally got the win they were looking for, and will look to build upon it going forward. There next chance to do so is this Sunday at Stony Brook University.
