The Origins of Poker
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Reddit

Poker is one of the most popular card games to play at an online casino, a land based casino or even just around the kitchen table. Games like poker have withstood the test of time and even gained popularity in some cases.

But where did this variety of online poker real money come from? We’ll be taking a look at where poker came from and how it has evolved into what it is today.

When was poker invented?

When it comes to figuring out where and when poker was invented, there are varying reports. Some people trace it all the way back to 1,000 years ago as a 10th century Chinese game played with dominos and cards.

There are others who trace it back to a Persian card game called “As Nas” that was created in the 16th century.

But most people say that poker as we know and play it today, was a game called “Poque”. This is a French game that grew in popularity in the 17th century. But this game is based on a 16th century Spanish game called primero.

This game is slightly different to Poque which is why people don’t consider it to be where poker actually originated from. In this game, three cards are dealt to every player and you have to bluff in order to get anywhere in the game.

It’s entirely plausible that each of these games had an element in them that inspired poker to be created. However, keeping track of all the different phases of different games that were built over so many years makes distinguishing where exactly it came from tricky.

Poker as we know it now with its rules and regulations originated in the late 18th century. There were lots of different ways to play poker even way back then.

However, it was always played with 52 cards but the deck would typically be reduced if there were only two players. This is still common practice in the UK today but many other countries don’t do the same.

There are reports that the English actor Joseph Cowell played the game back in 1829 when he was travelling along the Mississippi river. It was there that the people took the game on their travels along the river. Johnathon H. Green reported in his book that was published in 1843 that it was people working on the Mississippi river that made the game spread so quickly.

Gaming of any kind was a popular pastime of people who were working on the boats so a brand new game like this was sure to gain some attention. There was a lot of people travelling down the river and out to the west during the gold rush. Thus, poker spread across the USA, gaining popularity as it went.

When was poker invented?

Where is poker today and how has it changed?

As the game got more and more popular, there were different variations emerging. The Americans who had fallen in love with the game added in fun elements such as the wild card.

But it was in the 1970s that the game really started to take root as the most popular game out there. Casinos were starting to become more popular and championships started to pop up.

There were people who were famous just for playing poker which had never been seen before. The game was being referenced in popular culture – even in TV shows like Star Trek which are set in completely fictional worlds.

But it was when we started to develop online casinos that the love for poker really shone through. Now, you could play your favourite game of poker whilst being in the comfort of your own home. There was no need to get people round for a game or to have to travel to a land based casino. All the variations of poker were suddenly there for you to appreciate.

The ease at which people could access online poker made it even more popular than before – especially with young people who would otherwise not have experienced the game before.

Being able to play poker on your phone via an online casino app means that anyone can access a poker game whilst they’re on the go. Connectivity is one of the best things to come out of technological advancement and online casinos have taken full advantage of it.

There’s no limit to the variations of the game that you can play when you’re at an online casino so there’s always something new to try. It’s because of elements like this that we’ll be seeing poker being played for many years yet to come.

Now you know all there is to know about poker, why not try it out for yourself? If you’re already a poker player, why not give a different variety a go?
