Is Old RAM Worth Anything? 5 Things to Do with Old Memory Sticks

Everyone wants to make money, and it is possible to sell server memory and get paid. However, the price you’ll get quoted depends on various factors. Let’s find out if old RAM is worth anything.

Scrap DDR could be worth a lot of money, but all memory isn’t created equally. Therefore, you need to know its life cycle (does it still work), determine what server it went to (Cisco, Dell, HP, and others), and see how many GB it held/holds.

Will People Buy Used RAM Memory?

If you’re selling used memory from a server, it will likely sell quickly. These often have more GB (gigabytes) than laptop memory and other used IT equipment, so people are more willing to buy them. However, you have to think of its value from a strictly business standpoint.

Many people go through the process of selling and are sure they will get thousands of dollars in cash, but that’s not necessarily true. The price you get is based on who wants it and what they might have to do to receive it.

For example, data center services have tons of hard drives and will buy used graphics cards, memory, and more. However, they must focus on asset disposition, asset recovery, and the types of memory that work well for them.

Know Why You Want to Sell Memory

If you want to sell DDR, it’s likely because it doesn’t have enough GB to do what you must. It might work like new, but you’re upgrading your system.

Regardless, it’s important to know why you want to sell your used DDR to determine what you’ll get and who will buy each memory module.

Companies aren’t necessarily asking people to “sell memory to us.” Therefore, you will have to research them. Though businesses do purchase memory in bulk, they often want load-reduced DIMM for their equipment because it’s faster and works more proficiently. Overall, you must know what you have before you can determine how much it’s worth to others.

5 Things to Do with Old Memory Sticks

Whether you’re thinking of selling your used DDR for cash or not, here are five things to consider before you get rid of it.

1. Upgrade Your Old Computer

Old RAM modules can be used to upgrade your older system. Typically, old computers are useful, even if you can’t play games or they run slowly. Still, it’s possible to turn the old laptop into a media center.

Alternatively, you can upgrade other people’s used computer products. Just make sure you know which RAM sticks you have and the GB on them to determine if they’re compatible with those machines.

2. Sell Memory to Others

Clearly, most people want to sell used memory to make extra money that they can use to upgrade their systems. Just like many other major hosting providers and tech companies tend to sell multiple server memory to decrease the cost of upgrades.

If you’re looking to sell, you will have to do research to know where to go. Businesses that sell new and used laptops and desktops will probably have a place to sell used DDR in various GB forms. However, it could take a while, so you’ll have to sit on the memory for a bit and ensure that it doesn’t get damaged or dirty while waiting.

3. Create Art and Decorations with the Old Memory

What happens if you have damaged DDR? It won’t matter how many GB it holds because it’s useless in computers and laptops. In fact, companies and individuals aren’t likely to buy it, even if you want to sell.

Therefore, you could still earn money by turning it into artwork. Make some keychains and Christmas decorations for the tree with the little chips. A cutting tool and keyrings are all you’ll need.

Most DDR and computer RAM are the same color, which is a charcoal gray. You could glue all the chips to a canvas, using it as the background to paint on, as well.

Regardless, when you’re finished with the masterpiece, you can get a quote from interested buyers and still sell it, even though it’s not designed for the server or equipment any longer.

4. Recycle Instead of Selling the Used Memory

Recycling your used memory could be another alternative. Usually, it’s wise to contact companies that receive CPUs because they take the components apart and use them or melt them down to reuse.

Sometimes, recycling companies will buy the used memory from you to prevent it from going into a landfill. However, they might charge you for that, as well. Regardless, it’s wise to follow through with all data erasure and data destruction procedures to ensure that nothing is left behind.

While DDR and other RAM options are volatile and don’t hold what’s kept in memory, it’s never a bad idea to be as safe as possible.

5. Donate Used DDR to Schools and Companies

Most schools suffer in the technology department. They have poor hardware and low-cost equipment that might be cheaply made. Therefore, it might be wise to contact schools in your area and ask if they need your excess server RAM. Typically, they will want it for free, but you can ask if they wish to buy it.

Overall, you should be aware of the processes you must follow when donating your used memory RAM modules. It’s a straightforward process because they’re volatile. Whatever data that was stored on them gets lost when you remove the power source, but a hard drive is completely different.

Therefore, it’s wise to clean your disk drive and delete everything before selling or donating them.

If there are no schools that want your used memory, you could also ask hobby spaces if they could benefit.

Final Thoughts on Selling Used Memory

When you’re ready to sell server memory, it’s likely because you want to upgrade your system or have purchased a new one. Regardless, there are countless things you can do with it. Clearly, most people wish to earn money, which is possible through selling artwork you’ve made with the DDR or by selling the RAM itself.

However, there are other options available, such as donating and recycling the used pieces. Regardless, you should clean it and keep it safe until you’re ready to part with it.
