The History Of The NFL Draft

It’s time to tap into the deep history of how one of America’s greatest sports institutions began. The National Football League has been around for nearly a century, with its very first NFL Draft taking place in the 1930s.

Since then, the process has become much more organized. So sit back and relax as we dive deep into the remarkable past of the annual selection meeting behind the teams of professional American football talent – let us explore exactly what makes ‘the Draft’ such an exciting part of every fan’s sporting calendar!

Exploring The Origins of The NFL Draft

The NFL Draft is an event held yearly where National Football League teams select players from different colleges. The first NFL Draft was held in 1936, and it has since become one of the most important events on the NFL calendar.

The idea of a draft was proposed by Bert Bell, a co-owner of the Philadelphia Eagles, who wanted to create a system that would promote parity and competitive balance in the league. Before the draft, teams would sign players to contracts, and there was no way to prevent the stronger teams from signing the best players.

The first NFL Draft was held in the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Philadelphia, and it consisted of nine rounds. The Philadelphia Eagles had the first overall pick and selected Jay Berwanger, a running back from the University of Chicago. Berwanger never played in the NFL, but the draft became a permanent fixture of the league.

The Evolution of The NFL Draft Over Time

Over the years, the NFL Draft has evolved and grown in importance. The number of rounds has increased, and the draft has become a three-day event with live coverage on television and the internet. It has become a major media event, with millions of fans tuning in to see which players their favorite teams will select.

Teams can now choose players who are coming out of universities all around the country, and those drafted earlier are usually given higher salaries than those picked later in the process. Over time many improvements have been made to the draft process, such as instituting draft grades and introducing certain scouting metrics by teams to compile more accurate rankings.

Regardless, one thing remains constant – every April, millions of football fans around the world tune in for hours on end as teams make their selections and young players realize their lifelong goals.

NFL Draft Fun Facts

In 1967, the NFL and the American Football League (AFL) held a joint draft, and the first player selected was offensive lineman Ron Yary, who was taken by the Minnesota Vikings.

The most number of picks by a team in a single draft is 27, which was achieved by the New York Giants in the 1947 draft.

The number of picks in the first round by a team is three, which has been achieved by several teams, including the Minnesota Vikings, Dallas Cowboys, and Miami Dolphins.

The most consecutive drafts with a first-round pick is 37, which was achieved by the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1969-2005.

The longest time for a team to make a pick in the first round was the Minnesota Vikings in 2003, who used their entire 15-minute time limit before selecting Kevin Williams.
